Agua y energía
Ibiza and Formentera are a perfect reflection of the problem that has now become over-exploitation and lack of a resource essential for life: water.
Above all, its meaning and importance are not only natural but also economic, political and social. So far, isolated initiatives which raise the sustainable management of this precious good. Mass tourism does not help its reasonable use.
Today it is getting more water from two desalination plants located in San Antonio and Ibiza town, with another planned for Santa Eulalia. However, because these plants use lots of electricity, a temporary measure should be considered until they can find a more sustainable future.
In Ibiza and Formentera, despite recent pledges from local estates, regional and European renewable energy use is still very underdeveloped. Meanwhile, the growing demand for electricity on the islands are covered with a large number of generators in a power plant located on the outskirts of Ibiza, which use oil as fuel that is brought in by tankers.
There are already several companies and stores specializing in the sale of alternative technologies, installing solar thermal and less photovoltaic and wind power.
