About the Greenheart Guide
Background to the Guide: The idea for an eco-guide of the islands emerged from the need to answer the following simple questions: What can eco-tourists do in Ibiza? What eco services and products exist on Ibiza and Formentera?
The first edition of the Greenheart Guide to Ibiza and Formentera went to print in 2004, after the following work done by the NGO Ibiza Ecologic:
- Completion of a previous study together with the voluntary participation of a Earth University of Costa Rica, in 2002
- Research and data collection facilities
- Editing and translation of the guide in pocket format, presented in Spanish - English.
- Presentation of the Guide through EVP Foundation (Environment Vs Pollution) with the Consell Insular d'Eivissa i Formentera, in order to subsidize its publication for the summer of 2003. The project was approved.
- After a change of government at that time, the project runs out of funds for its construction and is paralyzed for eight months
- The Foundation for the Future decided to finance the publication of the Guide. It creates a new team that returns after six months of investigation and updated data collection to carryout the design and layout of the Guide
- The Guide is presented to the public in July 2004. 8000 copies are printed on recycled paper, a total cost of almost € 20,000
- A distribution system for Guide sales was established. The decision was made to sell the guide at 5 euros each to cover the costs of the publication and distribution
- It was found that the public of Ibza and Formentera is used to receiving free brochures and guides, so sales are not as successful as expected
- Thousands of copies are bought by the Island Council and several municipalities, in order to present at national and international tourism fairs, whilst the rest of the were given away free of charge for gifts, and to use a show of the work and project.
PLEASE BE PATIENT - ENGLISH TRANSLATION IN PROGRESS!
The guide hopes to promote local eco businesses and activities, as well as aiming to connect residents of the islands and to remind them of the important role the environment plays in ensuring our present and future economic potential. We want the guide to be a dynamic and effective method of public awareness in conserving and protecting natural and cultural spaces, as well as committed to improving recycling facilities, and the rational use of land, water and energy.
Finally, the guide emphasizes the advantages of working together for a sustainable future on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera.
